Thursday 19th April
Matt Adams of BLAST THEORY presents their new work DAY OF THE FIGURINES
7.30pm, Digital Lounge, Lighthouse

Day of the Figurines is on display at Lighthouse from 4th to 27th April from 12 – 4pm.

Day Of The Figurines is a mass participation artwork using mobile phones that is part board game and part secret society.

Set in a fictional English town that is littered, dark and underpinned with steady decay, the game unfolds over 24 days, each day representing an hour in the life of the town. Up to 1000 players place their plastic figurines onto the board. They are moved by hand in a meticulous performance throughout the duration of the exhibition.

Players participate by sending text messages. They must help other players as they receive updates from the town, missions and dilemmas. They can also chat to players who are near them in the town using text messages as events unfold in the town: a gig by Scandinavian death metallists, an invasion by an Arabic army, a summer fete.

Day Of The Figurines is the world’s first MUD (Multi User Domain) for mobile phones.

Day Of The Figurines was developed by Blast Theory in collaboration with the Mixed Reality Lab at The University of Nottingham, Sony Net Services and The Fraunhofer Institute as part of the European research project IPerG (Integrated Project on Pervasive Gaming).

Digiville is our monthly event for digital and moving image artists. Each event incorporates a diverse cross-section of the digital arts community, from installation artists to animators and VJs, and involves an initial presentation of work, either by individual artists or artist groups, followed by a Q&A/discussion session. The artists invited to present their work or perform are a careful mix of well-known names and less established artists.

Watch this space for news of our next Digiville event or contact us to join our mailing list and receive regular updates.
