Semiconductor make moving image works which reveal the physical world in flux; cities in motion, shifting landscapes and systems in chaos. Since 1999 UK artists Ruth Jarman and Joe Gerhardt have worked with digital animation to transcend the constraints of time, scale and natural forces to explore the world beyond human experience, questioning our very existence.

Interested in the possibilities of the computer as an artistic tool they have brought a sculptural approach to each work, exploring both the physicality of the medium and the data as material to reflect on the physical world around them.

More recently they have combined these approaches with ideas of natural philosophy to find a place where science and art meet. Their current research interests explore the process of making sense of the physical world through science, and how this process relates to our actual experience of the perceivable world.

Their work has received many awards most notably Best Film at the Cutting Edge from the British Animation Awards 2008 and has been exhibited, screened and performed extensively from solo shows at; Hirshhorn Museum Washington USA, Arnolfini Bristol UK and Nuit Blanche Paris, to solo screenings at the British Council Jerusalem, Museum of Contemporary Art Lyon and Dissonanze Festival Rome to performances at Mutek Festival Montreal, BFI London and Avanto Festival Helsinki.

In 2001 they broke the mould by releasing their works on DVD; this has been followed up with Worlds in Flux their most recent DVD on Fat Cat Records which accompanied their 2007 UK touring exhibition, Brilliant Noise.

Recent fellowships and residencies have supported site-specific work, including research and experimentation at the NASA Space Sciences Laboratories UC Berkeley, California.
