PYROPHONIC!

A groundbreaking evening of live performance by musicians and visual artists
Part of the Brighton Digital Festival 2006
Friday 3 November, The Old Market, Hove
In keeping with their dedication to showcasing
the hybrid cultural practices emerging at the forefront of technology
in the arts, Lighthouse and Blip presented a fresh mixture of live
performance, ‘Pyrophonic, a night of music and moving
image that fused the surreal wit of artist Paul Granjon with a series
of collaborative electronic, acoustic and visual improvisations
from the newly formed ‘Not Applicable Artists’ and film
artists Squint and Brittski.
Pyrophonic saw a chain of live art sketches, from a demonstration
of the ancient art of fire making to the re-invention the heart-beat
monitor, as an accompaniment to one of Paul Granjon’s favourite
love songs. The performance progressed through a series of improvisations
from the Not Applicable Artists, electronica pioneers Ollie Bown
and Isambard Khroustaliov (aka Icarus), who joined forces with masters
of free improvisation, Tom Arthurs (trumpet and flugelhorn), Maurizio
Ravalico (percussion) and Lothar Ohlmeier (bass clarinet). Working
through a number of short sets in different combinations the Not
Applicable Artists took the audience on an auditory joyride, carving
out the defining features of a new musical notion ‘freetronica’,
with an artillery of custom performance software managing sonic
processing, live interaction, and artificial improvisation.
Visual fuel was added to the final mix by film artists Squint and
Brittski. Squint and Brittski have been developing a technique for
making improvised visual environments, blending hand drawn and scratched
16mm footage with looped video and slides. This was their fourth
collaboration with Ollie Bown and Tom Arthurs and the second time
that data from their sonic systems was used to affect the images
directly.
