Malcolm
Buchanan-Dick is a sculptor who uses computers and multimedia to control
sculptural installation. The audience are often envited to control both
virtual.and real environments through large screen interfaces and physical
objects. Over the past few years he has been introducing digital art and
multimedia to a variety of youth groups of differing abilities and ages,
using a large touch screen. He has found that through his research that
a typical monitor and mouse can severely prohibit some peoples' access to
painting and drawing programs. This is probably due to the fine motor skills
and hand /eye coordination required to operate a mouse pointer on a small
screen. The monitor and mouse is not conducive to group participation. In
comparison the large touch screen offers many benefits to disabled people
with limited motor skills, poor vision, poor communication skills.
